Our club has a very diverse membership of retriever enthusiasts, from across the mid-Atlantic region. We include field trial and hunt test participants, breeders, and amateur trainers and handlers. We are proud of the accomplishments of our club members. Numerous Field Champions, Amateur Field Champions, and Master Hunters have risen from our ranks over the years. We welcome you, your family, and your retrievers!

Our History

The Blue Ridge Retriever Club was organized on June 22, 1986 to meet the needs of persons in the central and northern Virginia areas with an interest in the breeding and training of AKC registered breeds of retrievers. No retriever club had existed in the area up until that time. Twenty-three persons were present at the organizational meeting which was held at Mountain Run Kennel near Culpeper, Virginia. The philosophy of the club is to encourage participation by the full membership in its governance and activities.

The first special event of the Blue Ridge Retriever Club was held on July 26, 1986. This was a training trial which was conducted as a formal field trial. The event was held on the grounds of Mountain Run Kennel. Forty-four dogs were entered, 35 puppy/ derby, and 9 qualifying/ open. Handlers came from Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Live and dead ducks were used in the senior class, and livepigeons and dead ducks in the junior class. Club members ran the event, taking turns as marshals, bird throwers, and guns.

The next formal event was a super singles competition held on November 23rd on the grounds of Mountain Run Kennel. Thirty-six dogs were entered, 28 in the senior class and 8 in the junior class. Dead pheasants were used in both classes. Entries came from Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey. The judges were John Dahl and Andy Johnson. Club members again had the total responsibility for conducting the event, including providing refreshments throughout the day, and a cocktail party at its conclusion. Members of the (now defunct) Back Bay Knotts Island Club participated in the event. Trophies were given for first through fourth places in both stakes and rosettes awarded for judges of merit.

The club held an educational seminar in March, 2004 with noted trainer, John Cavanaugh. The Blue Ridge Retriever Club currently conducts two licensed AKC field trials each year; in May and October. We aim to hold at least one AKC hunt test each year. The goals of the club are to provide an organization for people interested in retrievers and to develop the capability of conducting training and competitive field events. The club is continuing to attract new members with the enthusiastic support of both new and experienced members. The short term goals of the club are to bring together persons in the area with common interests in retrievers and to provide quality events within distances that make the sport attractive. Its long term goal is to provide strong club membership and permanent grounds which will stabilize and promote the sport in this area in the future at a time when it will be threatened by increasing population density.
